I have been preparing myself for months that my little boy would be going ALL DAY to school. I have done my best to prepare him for the changes: eating at school, 2 "specials", recesses, etc. In the process I have also been readying myself to let go of the reins a little bit and let him be the magnificent little boy that he is. Torrey took Noah to school on the first day and I was fine, though it was eerily quiet. Des and Nate returned to school also and Landon was sick so that left my little Carter. Neither Carter nor I are used to being alone together. He has always been surrounded by kids since he was born (no maternity leave for superaunt) (This is a picture of the 5 pack when Landon was born... see Carter in red looking to his big bro and cousins)
So Carter didn't know what to do without other kids so he was very angry with me and demanded that I get Landon "right now." Of course I didn't comply but I too was struggling with what to do since I was used to wandering around the house cleaning up endless messes. So we trekked to the Y and the library in search of companions. We managed to find things to do including something.....domestic.....shocking I know! I actually cooked muffins.... okay they came from a bag and I just had to add milk but my oven was used for something other than frozen pizza!
Well when it finally came time to pick Noah up I expected the worst and had my homeschool plans all worked out in my head but as I pulled up I noticed a huge smile on his face. All I could do was cry as I slowly made my way through the endless pickup line. I had missed him so much!
He had tons to tell me about lunch, how nasty 1% milk is compared to Fat free, tables you can put things is (desks), 3 recesses, Last Initials (2 Noah's in his class), etc. I was so happy that he had such a great time!
The next day he told me he didn't need me to take him in... "silly mom the door is right next to my Kindergarten class"... this is a huge step since last year I had to take him in for a month and he forgot again after Christmas break. Still a little sad that he doesn't need me to show him where to go. Again he wasn't so thrilled about the lunch (he was holding back tears about this one) because when he opened the package the cheese came off the top. I did accomplish something grand today in my "spare time".... I put a battery in the clock that has been motionless for more than 2 years PTL!!! I also stepped up my game in the domestic department and tried my hand at banana bread from scratch (overripe bananas... not used to so few mouths to feed).
Well, I think we will make it through as Noah reported being moved to the back of the class to make room for the "loud kids," he got moved up to the yellow level since the green reading level was too easy, and I now have a little more time to sit and freak out about when am I going to get my referral....oh yeah and bake stuff.
